OVERVIEW OF FLAMECRAFT DUALS

Flamecraft Duals is a standalone game for one or two players. Designer Manny Vega and artist Sandara Tang set it in the same illustrated world as the original Flamecraft. That game, released in 2022, lets up to four players move around a town of shops, placing dragons and collecting goods. The Flamecraft Duals game strips all of that away. What remains is a tight pattern-building game that plays in 30 to 45 minutes.
Each turn follows the same sequence. Draw a token, place it on the board, trigger its ability, then check your shop cards. Luck shapes what comes out of the bag. Placement shapes what you do with it.
FLAMECRAFT DUALS SETUP
Unfold the gameboard and place it between both players. Shuffle all dragon tokens into the cloth bag. Deal each player two shop cards face down and set the rest of the deck within reach. Give each player three coin tokens. Decide who goes first and begin.
No tokens start on the board. If using The Fountain module, place the fountain marker on the central hexagon before the first turn.
HOW TO PLAY FLAMECRAFT DUALS
Three steps make up every turn: place a token, fire up its ability, then score any shop cards you can.
PLACING YOUR TOKEN
Draw one token from the bag without looking. Place it on any empty space or on top of an existing stack. Stacks cannot exceed three tokens. Only the top token in each stack counts for scoring or abilities. Placing on top of an opponent’s token removes it from scoring eligibility until something lands on top of yours.
FIRING UP
After placing, you may trigger the power of the dragon you just put down. Six artisan dragon types exist, each with a distinct ability. The bread dragon (yellow) lets you draw an extra token from the bag and place it immediately. The meat dragon (red) lets you move any adjacent token to any other space on the board. Crystal, iron, potion, and plant dragons each carry their own board-manipulation power. Every copy of the game includes a reference card detailing them all. Firing up is optional.
SCORING SHOP CARDS
Check your two shop cards against the board. Each card shows a pattern of three spaces in either a straight line or a triangle arrangement. Each position in the pattern specifies a dragon type. If the top tokens match the card’s layout, score it and draw a replacement. You always hold two shop cards going into your next turn.
Shop cards split into two values: 30 are worth 2 reputation points and 12 are worth 3 points. Three-point shop cards require harder patterns to assemble, but the extra reputation pays off when the board cooperates.
MANAGING COINS
Each player starts with three coins. Spending one coin refreshes your hand: discard both shop cards and draw two fresh ones without scoring. Every coin kept until game end is worth 1 reputation point. The pull between spending now and banking for later runs through almost every turn.
HOW DO DUAL DRAGONS WORK?
Among the 33 tokens, six are dual dragons, also called Hydragons. Each covers two dragon types simultaneously. The six combinations are Crystal/Bread, Bread/Meat, Meat/Plant, Crystal/Iron, Iron/Potion, and Potion/Plant.
When you place a dual dragon, choose which of its two powers to fire up. More importantly, the token counts as both its types at once while visible on the board. A Bread/Meat token satisfies a bread slot on one shop card and a meat slot on a different card simultaneously.
A single well-placed dual dragon can complete two shop cards in one turn. It also complicates your opponent’s blocking: a standard token blocks one type from a pattern, a dual dragon blocks two. Drawing one from the bag always shifts the momentum.
DRAGON TYPES AT A GLANCE
Keep a reference card to hand for the exact wording of each ability. The table below gives you the overview.
| Dragon Type | Token Colour | Key Ability |
|---|---|---|
| Bread | Yellow | Draw and immediately place an extra token from the bag |
| Crystal | Light Blue | Board manipulation (see reference card) |
| Iron | Dark Blue | Board manipulation (see reference card) |
| Meat | Red | Move any adjacent token to any other space on the board |
| Plant | Green | Board manipulation (see reference card) |
| Potion | Purple | Board manipulation (see reference card) |
WHEN DOES THE GAME END?
When the token bag empties or the last shop card is drawn, the game ends immediately. Score any shop cards you can still complete from your hand. Add 1 reputation point per unspent coin, then compare totals. Higher total wins.
WHAT ADVANCED MODES DOES FLAMECRAFT DUALS INCLUDE?
The Flamecraft Duals board game ships with two optional modules that expand the base rules. Both can be combined.
FANCY MODE
Before setup, each player secretly selects one of eight fancy dragon cards. Four carry active effects and four carry passive ones. Each card alters a specific rule for that session: new coin-spending options, modified stacking limits, or altered scoring conditions. No two card combinations produce the same experience. Reveal your fancy dragon at game end, as it can shift the final score.
THE FOUNTAIN
A fountain marker occupies the central hexagon from the start, blocking that space until someone moves it. Moving the fountain requires scoring a fountain card. Fountain cards work like shop cards but demand four consecutive spaces with the right dragon types on top. Standard shop cards need only three. All six fountain cards are worth 3 reputation points. Scoring one lets you move the fountain to any space on the board. Tokens sitting there return to the bag, and you keep one to place on your very next turn.
SOLO MODE
Playing solo removes Fancy dragons and The Fountain entirely. The rule is strict: score at least one shop card every turn. If none can be scored, spend a coin to continue. Once all three coins are gone without a successful score, the game ends. Check your reputation total against the scale on the solo reference card.
WHAT IS THE FLAMECRAFT DUALS DELUXE EDITION?
The Flamecraft Duals Deluxe edition upgrades every physical component in the box. Dragon tokens become weighted acrylic chips, bringing the total to 43 pieces. The extra count comes from a Buddy chip used in Fancy mode. Cards use plastic stock. Coins are metal. Most distinctively, the box hinges open and unfolds into the gameboard itself, removing the need for a separate board. The standard edition plays identically, with cardboard components and the separate gameboard.
