OVERVIEW OF HEAT: PEDAL TO THE METAL

The Heat pedal to the metal board game combines fast-paced racing with strategic card management. In this Heat: Pedal to the Metal board game guide, players can learn the basics of racing, engine management, and the most important Heat: Pedal to the Metal rules.

Designed by Asger Harding Granerud and Daniel Skjold Pedersen and published by Days of Wonder in 2022, Heat: Pedal to the Metal places players behind the wheel of classic Grand Prix cars. Every decision matters: shifting gears, managing Heat, choosing the right moment to boost, and finding opportunities to overtake opponents.

The game focuses on balancing speed and control. Playing powerful cards helps you move quickly, but pushing your engine too hard creates Heat cards that reduce your future options. Successful drivers need to know when to accelerate, when to cool down, and when to save their best cards for important moments.

HOW TO PLAY HEAT PEDAL TO THE METAL

Learning how to play Heat pedal to the metal starts with understanding the fixed race sequence. Each round follows nine steps:

  1. Shift Gears
  2. Play Cards
  3. Reveal & Move
  4. Adrenaline
  5. React
  6. Slipstream
  7. Check Corner
  8. Discard
  9. Replenish Hand

The first two steps happen simultaneously for all drivers. After cards are revealed, cars move according to their position on the track, with the car closest to the Race Line moving first.

How Do Gears and Speed Cards Work?

Your current gear determines how many Speed cards you play:

  • First gear: 1 card
  • Second gear: 2 cards
  • Third gear: 3 cards
  • Fourth gear: 4 cards

Before playing cards, you may shift one gear up or down for free. Moving two gears in one turn requires one Heat card from your Engine.

After choosing your cards, reveal them and add their Speed values together. This total determines your movement.

Players can also activate Boost once per turn by spending one Heat from their Engine. Boost provides additional Speed but increases the risk of overheating later in the race.

How Do Heat, Cooling, and Stress Work?

Heat cards represent engine strain. They have no Speed value and take up space in your hand, making future turns less efficient.

When you exceed a corner’s Speed limit, you must move Heat cards from your Engine to your discard pile equal to the amount you exceeded the limit.

Cooling helps recover your engine. During the React step, players may move Heat cards from their hand back into their Engine:

  • First gear: Cool 3 Heat cards
  • Second gear: Cool 1 Heat card

Stress cards create unpredictable results. When resolving Stress, reveal cards from your deck until you find a basic Speed card with a value from 1 to 4. Discard all other revealed cards and use the Speed card value.

How Do Corners and Slipstreaming Work?

Corners are marked with a Speed limit. If your movement exceeds that number, you must pay Heat based on the difference.

If you cannot pay all required Heat, your car spins out. You must:

  • Move back to the first available space before the corner
  • Pay as much Heat as possible from your Engine
  • Receive Stress cards depending on your gear
  • Return your gear to first gear

Slipstreaming allows drivers to gain extra movement when racing close together. If your movement ends beside another car or directly behind another car, you may move two additional spaces.

This extra movement does not increase your Speed value, meaning it does not count when checking corner limits.

What Is Adrenaline in Heat?

Adrenaline helps the drivers behind the leader stay competitive.

The last car to move receives Adrenaline. In races with five or more cars, the last two cars receive this bonus.

Adrenaline provides:

  • +1 Speed
  • +1 Cooling
  • Additional movement during the React step

This gives trailing players more opportunities to recover positions during a race.

Example Turn in Heat: Pedal to the Metal

A driver approaches a corner in third gear and plays three Speed cards with a combined value of 8. The corner limit is 6, so the driver exceeds the limit by two.

The driver pays two Heat from the Engine, then moves along the track. After finishing movement beside another car, the driver uses Slipstream to gain two additional spaces without increasing the Speed used for the corner check.

The aggressive move creates a better position but leaves the engine under pressure for future turns.

WHAT ARE THE HEAT PEDAL TO THE METAL ADVANCED RULES?

The Heat pedal to the metal advanced rules add additional strategy through upgrades, AI opponents, weather effects, and championship features.

Garage Module

The Garage Module allows players to draft upgrades before races. These upgrades change how cars perform and create different racing strategies.

Players can improve areas such as cooling, movement options, and speed management. In Championship play, upgrades are introduced progressively between races.

Legends Module

Legends do not play like normal drivers. Instead, they are controlled through a shared AI card system that determines their actions during races.

Weather and Road Conditions

HOW DOES THE HEAT CHAMPIONSHIP SYSTEM WORK?

The Championship System connects multiple races into a longer competition. Instead of focusing on one race, players compete across several events while improving their cars between circuits.

Championship games include additional elements such as:

  • Sponsor cards
  • Press Corners
  • Event cards

Upgrades are added progressively, allowing players to develop their racing strategy throughout the championship.
