types of boardgames

Eurogames, also called German-style games or even Designer board games, are a style of game very different from most American games. There is usually little to no luck aspects of the game and players will very rarely interact with each other directly. In Eurogames, combat is rare to none existent. Users will also play the full games as scoring tends to happen at the end of the game; no to little elimination in these types of games.

Eurogames are usually collection style games with multiple paths to follow in order to score points. Most games will rely on the competition for resources and that will be the indirect interactions players will use to compete with one another.

Eurogames usually have some kind of theme to the game but it rarely matters to the gameplay. These games are usually very beautiful with spectacular artwork and nice wooden game pieces.

There is no shortage of Eurogames on the market. Here are a few of the more popular and well-known ones, along with a brief description.

As you progress through the game, building up your city through three ages, you will collect resources, build up your military, invest in infrastructure and trade, and develop science. These paths can lead you down prosperous roads, but you will need to compete with the other cities if you want to be the best.

Power Grid

Power Grid is an updated version of a game called Funkenschlag. In Power Grid you and other players will compete to build the best layout and in turn power the most cities. You will compete over power plants, bidding for the ones on the market while knowing the next generation will be even better. You will also collect resources to power your plants. This makes players juggle resource collecting, competition for items, and the money and time needed to upgrade their boards.

Lords of Waterdeep
