Are you and your friends debating over whether to have a movie night or a drinking night? Then why not combine the two and play a movie drinking game? There are countless movies that make great drinking games, but in this post, I have rounded up 30 of my absolute favorites. So, grab some popcorn and some drinks, and get ready to play some of the best movie drinking games out there!
We also have an awesome list of the best drinking card games!
1. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
Since its initial release in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has become a cult classic. This movie musical is a quirky twist on Frankenstein that remains incredibly popular to this day. What could make this crossdressing sing-along film more entertaining, you ask? Why not turn it into a drinking game?
WHEN TO DRINK
Here are some potential drinking cues you can use for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but remember, these drinking games are all about creativity!
- Dr. Frankenfurter has an outfit change
- A new song starts
- A motorcycle appears on screen
- Someone says “Janet” (not including in songs)
2. THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Every fantasy geek on the planet has watched Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy at least once. This epic story has inspired countless modern fantasy books, shows, and movies. What better way to enjoy the series than with some drinks? The Lord of the Rings movie drinking game will get you drunk and will definitely have you seeing these films in a new light.
WHEN TO DRINK
The drinking rules below are broad and cover all three movies in the series. That said, you can easily narrow down the rules to cater to the specific film you are watching.
- There is a close-up of the ring
- Someone says, “Hobbit”
- Gollum says, “My precious”
- Sam says, “Mr. Frodo”
- Someone draws a sword
- A bad guy dies
3. SCREAM
This 1996 horror film became an instant hit and is now a classic film for every horror lover. The original film kickstarted a series of 6 films with a seventh installment on the way! These films seamlessly blend horror and comedy making for some hilariously ridiculous scenes. Ready to get drunk while watching Ghostface stalk his next murder?
WHEN TO DRINK
These movie drinking game rules are interchangeable for any of the Scream films!
- A phone rings
- Someone is stabbed
- Someone dies
- A pop culture reference is made
- Ghostface wipes their knife
- A character is insulted
4. THE BIG LEBOWSKI
One of my absolute favorite movies to drink along to is The Big Lebowski. The Cohen Bros film is a cult classic and still an immensely popular movie despite being more than 25 years old. The “Dude” spends most of the movie with a White Russian or a joint in his hand, so this is the perfect movie to drink along to!
WHEN TO DRINK
There aren’t too many drinking rules in the Big Lebowski drinking game, but considering that the word “Dude” is said 161 times, you’ll quickly understand why.
- Someone says, “Dude”
- Donny dies (finish your drink)
- Sam Elliot appears on screen
5. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
A 1975 comedy satire of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a movie that will have you spitting out your drink on the floor from laughter. This is a fun movie to watch on its own, but turn it into a drinking game for double the fun!
WHEN TO DRINK
There are plenty of potential drinking rules you could add for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but here are a few of the best moments!
- You hear coconuts
- Someone dies
- A character breaks the 4th wall
- The Black Knight loses a limb
- Someone mentions Camelot
5. THE ROOM
The Room has been deemed the best bad movie of all time. This laughably awkward movie written, directed, and starred in by Tommy Wiseau is both hilarious and cringeworthy at the same time. Despite its absolutely horrible dialogue and lack of a cohesive storyline, it is still surprisingly watchable (though it is more of a comedy than a drama). You’ll likely need alcohol to even get through this film, so turning it into a drinking game is almost a non-negotiable.
WHEN TO DRINK
The opportunities are endless when making a movie drinking game for The Room. And if you have seen the film before, you’ll know just how repetitive it is.
- You see a picture of a spoon
- A character says, “Oh, hi (name of another character)”
- There is a sex scene
- A character appears with no introduction
- Denny is being creepy
- “You are tearing me apart..” (finish your drink)
6. MEAN GIRLS
The 2004 screenplay by Tina Fey is one of the most iconic and quotable films of all time. While the target audience for Mean Girls is teens, this movie is easily just as enjoyable for adults. If you are ready to down some drinks while watching Cady take on Regina George, the Mean Girls drinking game is for you.
WHEN TO DRINK
Feel free to throw in any new rules. Mean Girls is perfect drinking movie because there are simply so many hilarious and quotable lines!
- A character gossips about Regina George
- Someone says, “Fetch”
- Someone calls Karen stupid
- A character pronounces “Cady” wrong
- There is a three-way phone call
- The “Jingle Bell Rock” song is performed (finish your drink)
7. LEGALLY BLOND
Reese Witherspoon’s iconic portrayal of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde is timeless, and this movie is one of the best casual movie drinking games to play. This film makes and breaks classic “blonde” stereotypes and is really ahead of its time in terms of tackling misogyny.
WHEN TO DRINK
There is quite a bit of repetition in this movie, so creating a drinking game for it is quite easy. Here are some fun drinking rules of Legally Blonde.
- Harvard is mentioned
- Legal jargon is used
- A character mentions a wedding or engagement ring
- Elle wears a pink outfit
- HARDCORE MODE: Elle has an outfit change (43 times!)
8. BAD BOYS II
This Michael Bay directed cop movie starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is hilarious, action packed, and a bit ridiculous… As with most Michael Bay movies, the movie revolves more around expensive explosions and action than having a cohesive plot, but that is what I love about it! If you are a fan of Bad Boys, you have to try out the Bad Boys II movie drinking game.
WHEN TO DRINK
Drink responsibly when playing this game as there will be plenty of opportunities to drink. Don’t let the small number of rules fool you. You’ll be downing drinks faster than you might expect!
- There is a slo-mo scene
- Someone says, “Motherfucker”
- There is a gunfight
9. STAR WARS
This 1977 movie was an instant hit and changed the face of sci-fi forever. If you grew up on Star Wars like I did, you’ll love the fun drinking rules that you can add to the epic film. So grab some drinks, pull out your lightsaber, and prepare to travel far, far away!
WHEN TO DRINK
To make this movie game even more fun, you can prepare some Star Wars-themed cocktails! Here are some rules for when to drink during Star Wars. Keep in mind these rules are meant for A New Hope, but they can easily be transferred to one of the other films.
- Luke complains about something
- “I have a bad feeling about this”
- You see a lightsaber
- The Force is mentioned
- Chewbacca Wookie yells
10. SHREK
A 2001 animated film with a soundtrack that is nostalgic for anyone over the age of 25, Shrek follows the journey of an ogre and his donkey companion. Playing the movie as a drinking game is a fun way to reimagine the children’s film as an adult!
WHEN TO DRINK
The Shrek drinking game is loads of fun! Ready to channel your inner ogre? Here are the rules for the movie drinking game.
- Shrek’s swamp is mentioned
- Shrek says something sarcastic
- A song from Shrek’s iconic soundtrack plays
- Shrek gets annoyed with Donkey
11. ZOOLANDER
Zoolander is a comedy film that satirizes the fashion industry, centering around a dim-witted male model, Derek Zoolander, played by Ben Stiller. This movie is absurdly funny and is stocked full of memorable and quotable phrases.
WHEN TO DRINK
You might lose some brain cells just from watching Zoolander, so why not add a bit of drinking into the mix?
- A word is not said correctly
- A celebrity cameo occurs
- Someone says or Zoolander does “Blue Steel”
- A character has their photo taken
12. TITANIC
James Cameron’s 3-hour and 14-minute Oscar-winning film follows a fictional love story centered around the real story of the Titanic shipwreck. This movie has excellent acting, amazing storytelling, and (for its time) amazing special effects. All that said, Titanic is long and can be a bit boring at times. My recommendation? Turn it into a drinking game to spice things up!
WHEN TO DRINK
You’ll be taking quite a few drinks during this movie with the following rules. Luckily, with almost 3.5 hours of run time, you’ll have more than enough time to sober up!
- The Titanic is mentioned
- A character is drinking alcohol
- You see the “Heart of the Ocean” necklace
- Ship hits an iceberg (finish your drink)
- Rose is naked (finish your drink)
13. HOME ALONE
Another kid’s movie that makes a great drinking game is the Christmas classic Home Alone. Kevin McCallister is accidentally left behind when his family goes on vacation for Christmas, leading to a hilarious battle between him and two burglars.
WHEN TO DRINK
You’ll definitely want to pace yourself when playing this drinking game, as you’ll be taking sips pretty often.
- Kevin says a bad word (shut up, jerk, crap, etc.)
- A character gets hit or falls
- There is a close-up shot of Kevin’s face
- Kevin creates a booby trap
14. ANCHORMAN
A hilarious comedy film set in the 1970s, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy depicts the competitive and absurd world of broadcast news. This film has a stacked cast, starring Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, and Ben Stiller, to name just a few. This is a perfect movie drinking game, especially if you have seen the movie a few times and wanna take your watch party to the next level.

- Baxter barks
- Brick says something weird
- Ron Burgandy says his own name
- A street brawl occurs (finish your drink)
15. RUSH HOUR
Rush Hour is one of my personal favorite cop movies of all time. This 1998 film is a blend of comedy and action and stars Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. You’ll be laughing out loud without any alcohol, so you can only imagine how fun this film will be with a few drinks in your system.
WHEN TO DRINK
Rush Hour is easily one of the most quotable movies of all time, and it makes for the perfect movie game. Here are some fun moments to take a drink during the film.
- A fight breaks out
- Someone does or says something racist
- Jackie Chan does something awesome
- Chris Tucker says, “Man!”
- Someone pulls out a gun
- “My Daddy Once Caught a Bullet with his Bare Hands” (finish your drink)
16. DAZED AND CONFUSED
Yet another movie to have some drinks alongside is Dazed and Confused. A coming-of-age film set in the 1970s, Dazed and Confused is a cult classic. This is not only a great movie all around but also the breakout role for Mathew McConaughey. His iconic phrase, “Alright, alright, alright,” was coined during this film and was actually improvised.
WHEN TO DRINK
You’ll feel immersed in the culture of the film by turning Dazed and Confused into a movie drinking game.
- A character drinks or does drugs
- Someone gets “paddled”
- Someone says, “Shotgun”
- A classic rock song plays
17. AIRPLANE
Leslie Nielson’s comedy style is eternally hilarious. And if I summed his acting up into a single film, it would undoubtedly be the 1980 film Airplane. This disaster genre parody is ridiculously funny and has some geniuously timed jokes. A perfect movie to enjoy some drinks with.
WHEN TO DRINK
This is another drinking game with very few rules, but you’ll see why when you start watching! There are nearly 3 jokes per minute in the film!
- A pun is used
- You see the outside of the plane
- The plane is safely landed (finish your drink)
18. PULP FICTION
One of my all-time favorite movies, Pulp Fiction, is Tarantino’s crown jewel. This movie has a stacked cast, starring Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and even Quentin Tarantino himself! There are too many iconic scenes to count in this film, and it is easily one of the most quotable films ever made. While alcohol is not required for Pulp Fiction, it sure will elevate your viewing experience!
WHEN TO DRINK
Pulp Fiction is on the top 20 list of films with the most “F-Bombs”. So, if you want to challenge yourself, drink every time an F-word is said. Here are some alternative drinking rules.

- Jules recites the Bible (finish your drink)
- HARDCORE MODE: Someone says the F word (265 times!)
19. SUPERBAD
Superbad, a coming-of-age comedy starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, is a hilarious exploration of friendship, high school antics, and the quest for an absolutely legendary party. This is honestly the perfect movie to drink to, as the main characters get into some really embarrassing and cringe-worthy moments that you can’t help laughing out loud to.

Get ready for a wild ride as you drink while watching Superbad. Here are the drinking rules to follow:
- Someone drinks or does drugs
- Someone refers to a penis
- A character says, “Mclovin”
- HARDCORE MODE: Someone says the F word (187 times!)
20. THE PRINCESS BRIDE
A classic movie that is perfect for a night in with some drinks is The Princess Bride. The world that William Goldman explores themes like love, revenge, cleverness, loyalty… and so much more packed into a single 1.5-hour film. While this is one of those movies you can thoroughly enjoy without a single drop of alcohol, drinking while watching The Princess Bride can only make the experience of watching this film that much sweeter.
WHEN TO DRINK
There are some super fun catchphrases that occur throughout the movie, so it only makes sense to drink along with some of these. Plus, Andre the Giant’s role in the movie makes for another great opportunity to drink!
- A character says, “Inconceivable”
- You hear “love” or ”as you wish”
- Indigo Montoya says, “My Name Is Inigo Montoya”, “You Killed My Father”, “Prepare to Die”

21. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
You’ll likely have nightmares for weeks after watching Nightmare on Elm Street. I sure did after watching it for the first time! This classic horror film follows a group of teenagers who are hunted down by Freddy Krueger in their dreams. What better way to enjoy this creepy horror movie than with a few alcoholic beverages?
WHEN TO DRINK
- A character falls asleep
- You see, Freddy Kreuger
- A character dies
- Someone denies Freddy Kreuger’s existence
- Freddy says one of his one-liner catchphrases
22. THE GOONIES
Any 80s movie fan will have watched The Goonies at least once. In this film, a group of young boys unexpectedly goes on an adventure in search of the pirate “One-Eyed Willie’s” treasure. It is equally hilarious, action-packed, and thrilling, making for a perfect nostalgic classic. This is a perfect movie for any occasion and also makes a fun drinking game.

Here are some fun drinking rules for the classic 80s movie The Goonies.
- Chunk eats or talks about food
- Someone is mean to Sloth
- Someone mentions the Fratelli’s
- You see a map
- Chunk does the “Truffle Shuffle” (finish your drink)
23. AMERICAN PIE
One of the raunchiest teen comedies of all-time, American Pie is an absolute classic film. This 1999 coming-of-age film is not a film you would EVER want to watch with your kids (or your parents), but it is perfect for a movie night with friends. To make this sex-filled cult classic even more entertaining, watch it while drinking a few beverages.
WHEN TO DRINK
There are plenty of opportunities to drink during an American Pie drinking game. Here are a few of my favorite rules.
- Someone says the word “sex”
- A character is drinking on screen
- You hear, “This one time at band camp”
- The “pie scene” (finish your drink)
- Nudity (Chug for the duration)
24. JURASSIC PARK
Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park is a timeless adventure that brought dinosaurs to life on the big screen. There have been many iterations of Jurassic Park since the original movie was released in 1993. Wow! Has it been that long already? But just because this movie is over 30 years old doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it any less. In fact, if you want to spice up the movie watching experience a little bit, grab yourself some booze for this dino-sized game.
WHEN TO DRINK
Drinking some alcohol while watching dinosaurs run around? That sounds pretty awesome, doesn’t it? Here are the drinking rules to keep in mind when watching Jurassic Park:
- Anything/anyone dies
- Hammond says, “Spare no expense” (finish your drink)
- You hear the Jurassic Park theme music
- Samuel L. Jackson has a cigarette in his mouth
- You see the amber mosquito cane
25. THE HANGOVER
There’s something fitting about drinking alcohol while watching a movie titled The Hangover. The Hangover is a classic hilarious movie to watch in the company of friends. This is one of those movies that will have you rolling around in laughter as you listen to dirty joke after dirty joke. This movie is definitely not for those who can’t take a joke! And with a few drinks in your system, you’ll find that you’ve never laughed harder!
WHEN TO DRINK
There are too many moments to choose from when deciding when to drink when watching The Hangover, but this is a great list to get you started.

- HARDCORE MODE: Someone says Doug
26. 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN
Honestly, every time I rewatch 40 Year Old Virgin, I’m reminded of just how amazing this movie is. It’s heartfelt, unique, and, of course, downright hilarious. In this 2-hour movie, you follow the adventures of Andy Stitzer, a 40-year-old virgin whose coworkers try their best to get him laid. There are some comedy gold scenes scattered throughout the film, including the iconic chest-waxing scene (did you know that Steve Carrell actually waxed his chest for this?)!
WHEN TO DRINK
In my opinion, these are the best moments to drink while watching the movie. You’ll be getting buzzed and even drunk in no time!
- Steve Carrell says something nerdy
- You hear the word “virgin”
- Andy fails at having sex
- Andy loses his virginity (finish your drink)
27. TWILIGHT
There’s something about watching subpar films as a drinking game. Twilight definitely falls into this category, but there’s no denying its captivation. After all, Edward is a sparkly vampire – and what’s more captivating than that? Although not meant to be a comedy, the premise is just ridiculous enough that you can turn it into a funny evening as you binge the Twilight series (and alcohol).
WHEN TO DRINK
While these drinking rules are best suited for the first Twilight film, you can easily apply them to all five films if you want to binge all of them!
- A character says “vampire”
- Someone sparkles
- Bella touches her hair
- You laugh at something that isn’t supposed to be funny (finish your drink)
28. MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE
Looking for an entire collection of movies to watch and get drunk at the same time? Try a Marvel film! While each MCU movie might be different, they all fall under the same universe, so it’s super easy to binge and watch once you get into it. Within the MCU, you can find some pretty awesome films and others that are pretty forgettable. But whatever film you watch, you can easily turn it into a drinking game to make the night even more entertaining.
WHEN TO DRINK
I know the MCU is a pretty broad category, but since they all follow a basic structure, you can easily apply the same movie drinking rules to every Marvel movie. Here are the drinking rules to follow.
- A character puts on or takes off a super suit
- Expensive damage to building(s) occurs
- A character talks to an AI
- A non-title character superhero appears
- A new villain appears
- A civilian is saved from certain death

29. BACK TO THE FUTURE
A classic movie that never gets old is Back to the Future. This movie is one you can watch even when you’re in the foulest of moods, and you’ll be feeling upbeat again in no time. If you want to make Marty’s adventure of trying to get his parents back together all the more fun, turn it into a boozy game!
WHEN TO DRINK
In Back to the Future, there are some key moments where you’ll be fully finishing your drink. But don’t worry; you’ll also be taking one too many sips throughout as well:
- Someone says “McFly”
- Lorraine flirts with her future son
- You see a clock
- Marty travels in time (finish your drink)
30. DIE HARD
Bruce Willis as John McClane in Die Hard has become an iconic figure in the action movie genre. But more than a simple action film, Die Hard has become a favorite Christmas movie for fans around the world – including myself! This classic 1988 film is packed with suspense, explosions, and memorable one-liners (which you’ll obviously have to finish your drink to!).
WHEN TO DRINK
Die Hard is an absolute rollercoaster of a film to watch around the Christmas holidays. With a beer or eggnog in hand, here are the movie drinking rules for Die Hard:

31. ELF
If you’ve gathered with your friends for Christmas, what better movie to watch than Elf? Elf is one of those ridiculous movies that has become a classic over time. Even without a drink, this movie is probably one of the most entertaining movies out there. You’ll be laughing out loud with your friends and family in moments like Buddy fighting fake Santa to Buddy sitting on Papa Elf’s lap and everything in between.
WHEN TO DRINK
There’s so much comedy gold scattered throughout the entirety of the movie that you could probably drink for every second of it. But don’t worry; we’re not trying to get you alcohol poisoning. Here are the key moments you should take a drink.
- Buddy says, “Santa”
- Buddy eats candy
- Buddy says, “Christmas cheer”
- Buddy’s dad gets annoyed
- Buddy chugs 3 liters of soda (chug, chug, chug!)
