OVERVIEW OF BARONY

Throughout the game of Barony, players act as barons, pillaging lands and expanding their kingdom. Who will become the newest king? Players score points by gathering resources, increasing their ranks, and building more cities. The player with the most points wins the game, and they become the new king.

SETUP

Firstly, each player is given nine tiles, with which they will create their city. They are to do this by randomly placing the tiles. Any unused tiles should be returned to the box. The Resource tokens are placed beside the board, creating the resource bank. Every player will choose a color to represent them throughout the course of the game. They will then collect a reference sheet, 14 villages, 7 knights, 2 strongholds, and 5 cities in their corresponding color.

In a clockwise order, players will place their cities and their knights. The first player is randomly chosen, and they will place a city and a knight in a space during their turn. The next player will do the same, except the final player. They will instead place three cities instead of only one, and they will place one knight into each of their city. This will continue in a clockwise fashion until all players have placed their cities and knights.

The counters are placed on the zero space of the scorepad. The youngest player will choose who is first. The first player will collect the First Player token. The youngest player is allowed to choose themselves.

GAMEPLAY

Gameplay is played in turns, which take place in a clockwise direction. A player may choose one of the following actions to complete during their turn: noble tile, expedition, new city, construction, movement, or recruitment.

If the player chooses to recruit, then they will place up to two nights into a chosen city space. If the space is adjacent to a lake, then three nights may be placed there. If no knights are available, then this action cannot be taken. Players may choose movement and move a knight or two to an adjacent space.

Players may construct by replacing their knights on the board and using resource tokens to build. If players to create a new city, they replace one of their villages with a city from their reserve, earning ten Victory Points. In order to complete an expedition, one knight must be removed, and one is placed in a space on the edge of the board.

Finally, if a player wants to earn a noble title, they must discard fifteen Resource tokens. The game continues, with each player taking a turn and choosing an action, until a player becomes a Duke.

END OF GAME

The game comes to an end when a player becomes a Duke. At this point, the current round will continue until it ends, ensuring that each player gets an equal number of turns. The players will tally their points. The player with the most Victory Points is crowned the King and wins the game!
