OVERVIEW OF THE PUERTO RICAN DRAWING GAME
The Puerto Rican Drawing Game is a connecting domino game for 2 to 3 players. The goal of the game is to score the needed number of points to win first.
SETUP
The dominoes are shuffled, and each player will draw their hand. Each player draws a hand of 7 tiles each.
The remaining tiles form the boneyard, but the last two tiles cannot be drawn from it.
GAMEPLAY
The leading player will be the one holding the double 6, or the highest double. They will start the train with this tile. Then in counterclockwise order, each player will take turns placing tiles to either end of the train. The tile played to the end of the train must match on the side connected with the end of the train.
On a player’s turn, they must play a tile. A player must draw tiles if they cannot play a tile immediately. If drawing, there must be more than 2 tiles remaining in the boneyard. The player continues to draw tiles until they can play a tile. A player’s turn will always end with them playing a tile unless the boneyard is depleted.
After the draw pile has only two tiles remaining then no more tiles can be drawn. If a player no longer can play a tile on their turn they must pass.
Doubles are played centered but do not branch the train.
The game continues until a player plays their last domino or until no player can play a domino to the train.
SCORING
After the round ends each player counts the number of pips remaining in their hand. If a player has no dominoes in hand, then their pip value is 0.
The player with the lowest pip value is the winner of the round and scores the sum of all other players’ pip values minus their own. If there is a tie, then no player scores for the round.
The game continues until a player reaches the targeted score. For a 2-player game, the target score is 100 points. If playing a 3-player game the target score is 61 points.
The winner of the previous round will be the leading player for the next round. If there is a tie, then the highest double leads again. Some variations, however, have the blocking player as the next leader.
END OF ROUND
When a player reaches the targeted score the game ends. This player is the winner.
