OVERVIEW OF ULTI

Ulti is a Hungarian game that is rarely known outside of Hungary. It is also known as Robber Ulti, due to the robbing that takes place with each bid. Each declarer tries to win the last trick with the lowest trump. It is the perfect twisted trick taking game for three players!

SETUP

To begin the game, each player will draw a card from the shuffled deck. The player who draws the lowest card will be the first to deal. The deal and the gameplay continue counterclockwise around the group as the game continues.

The dealer will be the one to shuffle the cards, and the player to the left will cut the cards. The dealer and the player on their left will have 10 cards, whereas the player on the right will get 12 cards. Two of the players decide to play together, and one of the players decide to be the declarer. The game is ready to begin!

GAMEPLAY

During each hand, the player who wins will choose the trump suit and declare themselves as the declarer. The declarer and team will attempt to outbid the other to take tricks, as a normal trick taking game works.

The player who received 12 cards will then choose two cards from their hand and place them on the table without showing them. These cards are referred to as the talon. Each player may choose to pass or pick up the talon and make a bid. The player who chooses to take the talon must place a higher bid than the last and place two cards on the table, reforming the talon.

This continues until all players are unable to bid and choose to pass. The winning player will lead the first trick, and consecutively each winning player after will lead the next trick. Each player must try to play a card of a higher value than the last. The player who plays the highest card wins the trick.

Each time a player wins, they receive a predetermined amount from each of their opponents. One point from each player is standard. When the declarer is able to win the last trick with a seven, they may win the game. If they can’t, the team wins!

END OF GAME

The game comes to an end when the predetermined number of tricks have been played out. The goal of the game is for the declarer to win the last trick with a seven card. If they are able to do so, then they win the game. If not, the other players win.
