At ages 8 to 10, kids are in a bit of a sweet spot when it comes to board games. They’re past the super basic games (great news for the adults tired of games like Candyland!), but they’re not quite ready for the super long, rule-heavy strategy games either.
So the best board games for 8–10 year olds? They’re the ones that are easy to learn, fast to play, but still have just enough strategy (or chaos) to keep things interesting – even for the adults playing with them!

1. TACO CAT GOAT CHEESE PIZZA
No products found.
Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza… A super long game name, I know. But despite the name, don’t worry; this is one of those games that you explain in 10 seconds, and then chaos immediately follows.
To play, everyone just takes turns placing cards while saying “taco, cat, goat, cheese, pizza” in that order. If the word you say matches the card you flip, everyone slaps the pile. Last one to react takes all the cards. Yikes.
That’s literally the whole game.
There are a few extra rule cards (like gorilla and narwhal) that force players to do actions before slapping, which adds another level of chaos!
2. SCRABBLE
No products found.
One of our favorite word games, Scrabble is a bit slower than most games on this list, but it’s great if you want something that actually makes kids think and learn new words.
The idea is simple: build words on the board using letter tiles, with certain spaces giving bonus points. While playing, you can build off other players’ words, which adds another layer of complexity and critical thinking. This one will really test the kids’ vocabulary! Maybe have a dictionary on hand to help them learn new words, too.
Remember: oftentimes, placement matters more than the words themselves, as a short word could easily be worth more points than a long word, when placed in the right spot.
3. HEDBANZ
No products found.
Hedbanz is one game that will have the kids laughing out loud. To play, each player wears a card on their forehead and has to guess what it is by asking yes-or-no questions. You’re racing against a timer, during which you’ll ask questions like:
- Am I an animal?
- Am I food?
- Can I fly?
4. BATTLESHIP
No products found.
A board game for 2 players, Battleship is one of those classic board games that are a must-have in any collection. In this game, each player secretly places their ships on a grid, and then you take turns calling out coordinates, trying to hit your opponent’s ships. Once you hit all parts of a ship, it sinks. Once you sink all of your opponent’s battleships, you win the game.
5. TICKET TO RIDE
No products found.
Want to introduce strategy board games for the kids aged 8-10? Ticket to Ride is a great place to start.
Players collect colored train cards and use them to claim routes between cities on the board. The longer the route, the more points you get, but the real goal is completing secret tickets that connect specific cities.
While you play, you’ll block other players’ routes and develop a real strategy in order to win.
If that sounds like too much, Ticket to Ride First Journey simplifies everything without losing the core idea.

6. CLUE
No products found.
Clue is basically a mystery puzzle disguised as a board game, and there’s a reason it’s still an absolute classic to this day.
In this game, you’re playing a character on a board while trying to figure out three things:
- Who committed the crime
- What weapon they used
- And where it happened
Players move around the board collecting information, making guesses, and slowly eliminating possibilities until someone makes a correct guess!
7. YAHTZEE
No products found.
If you like dice games, Yahtzee is a great one to introduce to your 8- to 10-year-old child. The basic rule of the game is this: You get three rolls per turn and choose which dice to keep each time, trying to land combinations like:
- Three of a kind
- Full house
- Straights
- Yahtzee (five of a kind)
The twist is that once you use a scoring category, it’s gone. So you’re constantly deciding whether to lock in a decent score or risk it for something better. This is one of those games that is super easy to learn, but surprisingly strategic, making it fun for adults as well.
8. THE GAME OF LIFE
No products found.
A great board game to introduce to kids aged 8 to 10 is The Game of Life. Play is simple: players spin, move along the board, and go through different life events, including choosing careers, earning money, having kids, and making random decisions along the way that may help them win the game.
There’s not a ton of strategy here, but part of the fun is the unpredictability and the storytelling aspect of the game.
9. SPOONS
No products found.
Spoons is one of the most chaotic games on this list of the best board games for kids ages 8-10. While technically more of a card game, this still deserves a spot here, as you play with more than just cards.
The goal of the game? Everyone is trying to get four matching cards by passing cards around the table at the same time. The second someone gets a match, they grab a spoon.
Then here’s the chaotic part: everyone else scrambles to grab one too. There’s always one less spoon than players, so someone gets eliminated each round.
The last player remaining is the winner.
10. PICTIONARY
No products found.
Pictionary is all about translating ideas into drawings. One player draws while their team tries to guess the word before time runs out. No talking, no writing letters… just drawing.
The actual drawing skill level doesn’t matter at all. In fact, worse drawings usually make it better!
11. KERPLUNK
No products found.
One of our favorite board games for kids aged 5, 6, and above, Kerplunk is a game that is a bit more physical and easy to understand than some of the others on this list.
Basically, all you need to know is that this game consists of a tube full of marbles held up by sticks. Then, players take turns pulling sticks out.
That’s it.
During the game, marbles will start to fall. The player with the most marbles at the end loses.
12. AZUL
No products found.
Azul is one of the more strategy-heavy board games on this list, but it’s still very approachable for kids ages 8-10.
To play, players take turns drafting colored tiles from shared pools and placing them onto their boards to complete patterns.
The challenge comes from avoiding leftover tiles (which lose you points) and watching what other players are taking.
It’s quieter than most games here, but really satisfying once you get into it!
13. MONOPOLY DEAL
No products found.
Want to play Monopoly but don’t want to commit to a 2-hour game? Check out Monopoly Deal, a 15-minute card game.
In this game, you’re collecting property sets using cards, and the first to complete three sets wins. But of course, things are not as simple as that, as there are action cards that let you steal properties, charge rent, force trades, and more. This game is much more fast-paced than the original board game, and, in my opinion, way more fun!
14. TROUBLE
No products found.
Also called Frustration, Trouble is a simple board game that is plenty of fun no matter how many times you play it.
To play, simply pop the bubble, move your piece, try to get all your pieces around the board and home.
The catch? Other players can land on your space and send you back to the start.
15. GUESS WHO?
No products found.
No board game list for kids ages 8-10 is complete without a mention of the classic Guess Who? You probably still remember how to play, but to play this deduction game, all players need to do is ask yes-or-no questions to narrow down the character the other player has.
They can ask questions like:
- Do they have glasses?
- Are they wearing a hat?
The goal is to eliminate as many options as possible until only one remains.
