OBJECT OF CURSE OF STRAHD: The object of Curse of Strahd is to defeat Strahd and rid the land of Barovia from evil.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS: One Dungeon Master and 3 to 7 Players

MATERIALS: The Curse of Strahd Campaign Book, other reference material and books (optional), dice, and player character sheets.

TYPE OF GAME: Horror Themed Role-Playing Game

Curse of Strahd is a Dungeons and Dragon campaign for 3 to 7 player characters ran by a Dungeon Master, or DM for short. The goal is to move through the land of Barovia making allies, completing quests, and leveling up all to take on the ultimate enemy, Strahd Von Zarovich.

To get set up to start the campaign the DM should read through the book and familiarize themselves with the world and the characters within it. The players should start to build their Player Characters or PCs for short.

A date and time should be set for the first session, and the dm should come prepared with any needed material and maps for the encounters. I also highly recommend before each session the DM rereads any material from the book that will most likely come up with the next session just to refresh themselves.

Curse of Strahd is like any DND campaign. There are countless ways to play and none of them are wrong, just different. Some DMs prefer to strictly follow the book, but it also can just be used for reference so that you may craft a unique and personalized experience for all your players.

Starting Out

When you first begin the DM has many options. The opening sequences available in the book give you many ways to introduce the PCs into the world of Barovia, or you can make your own.

The DM may also decide on things such as the starting level, and what adventures you will encounter first in the world.

Leveling Up

After the sessions have gone on and players have completed objectives and shown their heroics, they will start to level up.

Leveling up in Curse of Strahd is done with milestone leveling and is up to the DMs discretion. The book does recommend certain levels needed for a party to encounter certain events in the book, but again it is completely up to the DMs discretion.

End Game

Eventually, it will be time for the players to end the campaign by attempting to rid the land of evil and defeat their ultimate foe, Strahd. The players will fight through Castle Ravenloft to find him and have their final battle. The results of this battle will determine the fate of all who reside in Barovia.

If players are successful, they will have freed the land and will now be able to return to their past lives. If they fail, they will most likely have perished. All the residents of the land and any surviving PCs will be trapped in Barovia until a more skilled party comes along and saves the land from evil.
