INTRODUCTION OF FLUTTERING SOULS

Fluttering Souls is a two player card drafting and set collection game.  Each round, players build a unique layout determined at random and take turns choosing cards to add to their collection.  At the end of the round, players earn points for completed sets.

MATERIALS

Fluttering Souls includes 21 butterfly cards.  There are five types of butterflies in this game.  Each one has its set requirements & point value or special ability for the game.

EIGHT EIGHT

Collecting sets of two Eighty-Eights will earn the player two points for each set.  There are eight of these in the deck.

BLUE MORPHO

There are six Blue Morphos in the deck.  Collecting sets of three will earn 4 points for each set.

MONARCH

The Monarch is a versatile card.  There are only four of these, but if a player manages to capture all four they will earn 8 points.  Can’t capture them all?  No worries.  Earn 5 points for capturing three, or two points for capturing 2 of them.

SWALLOWTAIL

The Swallowtail can be used for two purposes.  Earn one point for a single Swallowtail.  If a player captures both Swallowtails, they may use the set as a single wild card.  A set can be used to help complete a different butterfly set.

GREAT EGGFLY

The Great Eggfly can be placed on the layout in order to block an opponent from collecting a card.  Once the Great Eggfly has been placed, cards under it cannot be accessed until it is removed.  The player that removes it may use the card on a future turn.

LAYOUT CARDS

The game also includes 15 layout cards.  One card is used per round to determine how the cards are distributed.  On the display, white cards are face up, and black cards are face down.

BUTTERFLY TOKENS

At the end of the round, the player with the most points wins a white butterfly token.

THE PLAY

SETUP

Shuffle the layout cards and place the pile face down on the table.  Turn the top card over.  The layout pictured determines how the butterfly cards will be distributed.  Place the butterfly tokens near the layout pile.

Separate the Great Eggfly from the butterfly deck.  Shuffle the 20 remaining cards and create the layout for the round.  Remember, white cards in the image are face up, and black cards are face down.

Determine who will go first.  The player that goes second possesses the Great Eggfly.

A PLAYER’S TURN

A player may choose one eligible card from the layout on their turn and collect it.  Only cards that are completely uncovered are eligible for play.

After a player takes the card they want, any face down cards that become uncovered are flipped face up.  That ends the player’s turn.

Play passes and continues as described until all of the cards have been collected.

The Great Eggfly

The player that has the Great Eggfly can play it immediately after they draw a card.  If a face down card becomes uncovered, that card is flipped face up before the Great Eggfly is played.  The Great Eggfly must be placed in the exact location of the card that the player collected.  Collecting the Great Eggfly takes up a player’s turn.  That player may use it on a future turn.

SCORING

At the end of the round, each player adds up the points they’ve earned for completed sets.  Any butterfly that is not part of a completed set does not earn points.  An individual Swallowtail earns 2 points.  The player who has the most points at the end of the round wins a butterfly token.

The loser of the round determines who goes first in the next round.

WINNING

The first player to win three butterfly tokens wins the game.
