INTRODUCTION OF UNO ULTIMATE MARVEL

UNO Ultimate is a collectible card game from Mattel that uses the UNO system at its core.  Many of the classic action cards are in the game, but along with them are popular characters, special powers, powerful enemies and devastating events.  Each player begins the game with their own character deck and a character card.  During the game, players will be attacked by enemy cards as well as their opponents in a struggle to be the first to win the game.  There are two ways to win in UNO Ultimate: be the first player to empty their hand, or be the last player remaining with cards in their character deck.

You can check out a deeper dive into the individual decks of Captain Marvel, Iron Man, Balck Panther, and Thor.

CONTENTS

In the 1st Edition box, there are four character decks.  Each deck consists of 56 cards total.  There are 47 playing cards, 1 character card, 4 enemy cards, and 4 event cards.

There is one blind bag that contains four foil cards.

SETUP

For the first game, do not shuffle all of the cards together.  Although UNO ultimate has some characteristics of classic UNO, it is a very different game.

Each player chooses one character deck from the box.  They first separate the enemy and event cards from it.  They also separate the character card from the deck.

Once each player has chosen a character, all of the event and enemy cards are shuffled together to form the Danger Deck.  This deck is placed off to the side.

Players should place their character card face up in front of them on the table, shuffle their character deck and place it face down beside their character card.  Finally, each player should draw seven cards from their character deck to form their starting hand.

THE PLAY

The youngest player goes first by placing any card face up in the center of the table to begin the Central Play Pile.  Before beginning the game, there are some keywords to be aware of.

ADD

When a player is forced to add cards, they draw that many from their character deck and add them to their hand.

DRAW

When forced to draw, the player draws the required number of cards from their character deck and loses their turn

BURN

A player burns the required number of cards by taking them from the top of their character deck and places them face up next to it.  This is called the Burn Pile.  Cards are always burned one at a time.  Unless the location is specified, a player will always burn from their character deck.

RECOVER

Cards in the Burn Pile can be recovered.  The player takes the required number of cards one at a time and adds them to their hand.

The other classic UNO actions are also in the game: Skip, Reverse, and Draw Two.

CONTINUING THE GAME

Now that the keywords are understood, the game can be continued.  Play will pass left at the beginning of the game unless a reverse card was played first.  In that case, play passes right.

On a players turn, they will complete the following actions:

  • Resolve any effects from attacking enemies, event cards, action cards, or opponent character powers.
  • Play a card from their hand and resolve their character’s power if it is activated.
  • If the card played pays for an attacking enemy’s cost, the enemy is defeated and discarded.
  • If the card played to the central pile has a danger icon, turn over the next card on the danger deck and resolve its effects.
  • End the turn by resolving any end-of-turn effects.

WHEN PLAYING A CARD

In order to play a card to the central pile, it must match in color, number, or symbol.  Wild cards can also be played.  A player may choose to draw a card from their character deck rather than play one from their hand.  If they choose to draw, and the card they draw can be played, they may do so or keep it.

If a player does not have a card that can be played, they must draw one card from their character deck.  If that card can be played, the player may do so or keep it.  If it cannot be played, the card must be added to their hand.

CALLING UNO

Play continues as described.  When a player gets down to their final card, they must call out UNO.  If they fail to do so, and an opponent calls out UNO before the next person takes their turn, the player who failed to do so must draw two cards from their character deck as a penalty.

THE DANGER DECK

The Danger Deck is composed of all the enemy and event cards that are in the game.  Whenever a card that has a danger symbol on it is played to the central pile, the Danger Deck is activated.  That player flips over the top card from the Danger Deck.

ENEMY CARDS

When an enemy card is revealed, the player who revealed it is now under attack by that enemy. They take the enemy card and place it face up above their character card.  If that player already has an enemy attacking them, it is replaced by the new one.  This does not count as defeating an enemy.

An enemy is defeated when the player plays a card that matches the requirement to defeat it.  There are eight possible requirements for defeating an enemy: play a specific color (red, yellow, blue, or green), play a number card, play a wild card, play an action card, or play a card with a danger symbol on it.  Wild cards cannot be used to defeat an enemy that requires a specific color.

EVENT CARDS

When an event card is revealed, its effect goes into effect immediately.

When the Danger Deck runs out of cards, shuffle the discard pile and begin it again.

CHARACTER CARDS

Each player has a character card with its own special power.  The player may choose to use the power once per turn.  Watch out!  Attacking enemies might inhibit a player’s ability to use their power.

WINNING

There are two ways to win the game.  If a player empties their hand completely, they win.  As the game continues, it is possible for players to burn out by running out of cards in their character deck.  If a player burns out, they are out of the game.  If all but one player burns out, the last player remaining wins the game.

CLEANING UP

When finished with the game, separate all of the even and enemy cards based on their character symbol and store them with the appropriate character deck.  This will make setup easier for the next game.
