OVERVIEW OF MITAINE
Mitaine, also known as Mittens, is a French- Canadian game. Mitten is a common scoring method, meaning two cards that are of equal value. Cards are played into a discard pile. Some cards can be captured if the top card is matched. Earning points is the key to winning the game! The first player or team to earn five hundred points wins. So, rack up those points!
SETUP
To begin setup, the cards will be shuffled and dealt depending on the number of players involved in the game. Two or four players are dealt three cards until each player has six cards. The discard pile is given four cards.
If there are three players, each player gets eight cards and four cards are placed in the discard pile. After all of the cards have been dealt, the game is ready to begin!
GAMEPLAY
The player on the dealer’s left begins the game, and gameplay will continue clockwise around the group. During a turn, a player who holds two or more cards of the same rank may call a group.
They may call Mitten if they have two cards of the same rank, Glove for three cards, and Sock for four cards. The player will then place one of the cards onto the discard pile, and then play the rest of the cards on their turn, one card at a time.
A Mitten will take two turns to complete; a Glove will take three turns to complete, and a Sock will take four turns to complete.
When an entire group is captured, the player will take the entire discard pile. If the player completes a Mitten, then the player will take one card from the Mitten and put it beside them faceup and discard the rest of the cards. If the player completes a Glove, the player keeps two of the cards, and the rest of the cards are discarded. Socks allow the players to keep three cards and discard the remainder.
Opponents have the chance to steal groups if they hold a group that may outrank the group that was previously called. The first player to complete a group will steal the pile, including all groups that were in it.
If there are two cards that match on top of the discard pile, and it has not been previously called, a player may add a card of equal rank and call the group. Gameplay continues until a player scores five hundred points.
