FAMILY CAMPING GAMES
Let’s start off with some games that the entire family can enjoy! These are our favorite family camping games, perfect for kids, teens, and adults.
Looking for fun games to play at summer camp? Head over to our article on our 30 top picks!
1. SCAVENGER HUNT
This is a classic game that we all have probably played once or twice as kids, whether it be with the family or in a summer camp. A scavenger hunt is a fun active game that can get a bit competitive!
WHAT YOU NEED
- Designated area for the hunt
- 5-10 objects to hide
- Paper
- Prizes
HOW TO PLAY
To start off, the organizer of the scavenger hunt will need to hide the items and write clues to scatter around the designated area. A creative tip is to be clever with the clues, making them riddles or puzzles to solve. Depending on the age demographic of the group, the organizer can make the scavenger hunt more difficult. You can even work in teams!
Once the clues are spread around and the objects are hidden, the organizer will give each team one clue to start off. This clue can either lead them to another clue or to an object. The players will run around, looking for hidden objects until all of the objects are found. The team who finds all of the objects first is the winner and receives a prize. This can be anything from a candy bar to a handmade trophy.
2. GEOCACHING
Geocaching is a new phenomenon that has been gaining popularity worldwide. It is a community-driven app where individuals hide items in random locations and then put the location of the item on the app along with a clue.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Smartphone with Geocaching downloaded
- Pen
HOW TO PLAY
Set your Geocaching app to your current location and you will see the pinned locations of the hidden objects in your area. To help you find these “caches”, you will also usually find a clue written in the description. And for some, they will even tell you what the object you’re looking for looks like.
The object will usually be a small pill bottle or film capsule with a bit of paper in it. The paper is for you to write your name and the date that you found the cache. Once you have logged your find, you simply put the object back where you found it and move on to the next cache.
3. WINK MURDER
Wink murder is a great camping game for the entire family. The more players you have for this game, the better. In this game, everyone sits in a circle and awaits their impending doom of being “killed” by the murderer.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Designated area for the game
- 1 deck of cards
HOW TO PLAY
To start off, all players sit in a large circle formation. Designate a particular card as the detective card and another as the murderer card. Once everyone draws, each player is assigned the role of detective, murderer, or citizen. During play, the murderer winks at the players in the circle to “murder” them. When a player is “murdered”, they count to five then fall onto the ground and pretend to die. For an added effect, you can dramatically act out your death!
The detective stands in the middle of the circle and tries to guess who the murderer is. The detective needs to guess the murderer before everyone else is dead. If they are unable to so, the detective loses and must play detective again.
4. IN THE NATURE OF THE ADVERB
In the Nature of the Adverb is fun for adults and a great way to teach the kids some new vocabulary. The guesser asks players to act out certain actions or gestures “in the nature of the adverb”, and the guesser tries to guess the adverb.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Designated area for the game
HOW TO PLAY
One player leaves the area and walks far enough away so that they cannot hear what the other players are saying. The other players then decide on an adverb for the game. Once they have decided on an adverb, they call back the guesser. The guesser then proceeds to ask the other players to do something “in the nature of the adverb”.
For example, if the guesser asks a player to do a pushup in the nature of the adverb and the adverb is “horribly”, the player should do a pushup “horribly”.
After a player has done action, the guesser can either try and guess the adverb or call on another player to do something. The guesser is allowed 3 guesses before the other players announce the adverb and send another player away to be the guesser. If the guesser guesses the adverb correctly, the last player to do an action “in the nature of the adverb” is sent away as the new guesser.
5. PERSONAL PREFERENCES
Personal Preferences is a hilarious icebreaker game that is a great way to get to know new friends and old friends alike. This is a simple game that is likely to produce some laughs along the way!
WHAT YOU NEED
- 5 slips of paper per player
- 1 pen per team
- 1 sheet of paper per team
- 1 hat or bowl
HOW TO PLAY
Give each player 5 slips of paper. On these slips of paper, each player writes 5 things, fold them up, and put them all into a hat or bowl. There are no rules for what these things need to be. In fact, the more random the things are, the more fun the game will be. You can write anything from “the color blue” to “sunscreen” to “Oprah”. One player then reads out 5 random slips of paper out loud.
Every team, including the player’s own team (minus the player of course!), guesses how the player would rank these 5 things from most to least favorite. Once done, the player announces the order of these random items in terms of their personal preferences, from least favorite to most favorite. Each team gets one point for every preference they get correct. After everyone has had their turn announcing their preferences, the team with the most points wins!
6. PAPER TELEPHONE
Paper Telephone is a great ice breaker and an even better camping game. A mix between telephone and Pictionary, this game is sure to make everyone laugh. When it comes to this game, the more creative the better. So, get your creative gears turning!
WHAT YOU NEED
- Pen
- Paper
HOW TO PLAY
Each player writes a sentence on a piece of paper. This sentence can be as silly or abstract as you like! Then each player passes their paper along to the player on their right who will then attempt to draw a picture of the sentence. Once that’s done, each player should fold over the sentence so only the drawing is shown, and this piece of paper is passed down to the player on the right once again. Each player will then try to guess and write down the original sentence using the drawing.
The pieces of paper keep getting folded and passed on until a predetermined number or when the pieces of paper return to their original owners. Read the final sentences out loud and get ready to laugh out loud when comparing the pictures and sentences from the start to bottom.
7. BOCCE BALL
- Full-size bocce balls measure 100mm each
- Set includes 4 green balls, 4 red balls, 1 white pallino, and 1 measuring device
- Poly-resin composite for long-lasting strength
Probably one of the most iconic camping games you can play is none other than Bocce Ball. Keep in mind that in order to play this simple but super fun game, you will need to bring a bocce ball set.
WHAT YOU NEED

HOW TO PLAY
Bocce ball is an incredibly simple game that you can play wherever you have enough yard space, making this the perfect camping game. To play, divide everyone into two teams. A chosen player than throws the smaller ball, also called the pallino. The objective of the game is to get your team’s balls closest to the pallino as possible.
The two teams then take turns to throw their team’s balls. The team that has the ball that’s closest to the pallino after all 8 balls are thrown wins the round! They win as many points as they have balls closer to the pallino than the opposing team’s closest ball.
The first team to win 12 points wins the whole game!
8. SOCCER
What makes soccer a great camping game is its sheer simplicity. All you need to play is a ball and then you simply designate some goaling areas. This extremely fun team sport is one anyone can play as long as they have some good coordination.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Soccer ball
HOW TO PLAY
If you’re playing soccer in a camping setting, you don’t need to follow all the rules. But you should still follow the basic structure. Divide the group into teams of two, then designate a goal area for each team and station a goalie at each post. The two teams battle for possession of the ball and try to score goals into the opposing team’s goal area. You earn one point for each goal scored! And the team with the most points after a designated point of time wins!
9. SPOONS
One of the most fun family camping games that both kids and adults will thoroughly enjoy is Spoons. Spoons is a classic card game with a twist that’ll keep your energy up long after the sun has set.
WHAT YOU NEED
- 52-card deck
- Spoons (1 less than the number of players)
HOW TO PLAY
Place one less spoon than the number of players in the middle. Then, deal four cards to each player, and the dealer leaves the rest of the cards in a pile on their right. The goal of this game is to have four cards of the same rank in your hand. In this fast-paced game, the dealer will start by picking up a card from the draw pile and then discarding a card to their left. Then, the player to their left will pick up that card and discard a card on their left. Play continues in this manner as players pick up cards on their right and discards a card to their left.
Once a player has all four cards of the same value, they must grab a spoon! All players must also grab a spoon at this point, and the player left without a spoon earns the letter S. Players earn a letter than spells the word, spoon, one by one. And once they’ve lost 5 times, remove a spoon from the game.
Continue playing until one player remains!

WHAT YOU NEED
- 1 pen per player
- 5 slips of paper per player
- 1 hat or bowl
- 1 timer
HOW TO PLAY
To play this game, give everyone five slips of paper to write a celebrity name on each slip. Then fold them up and put them all into a hat or bowl to be mixed up. All players should be divided into two teams.
In round one, a player from any team picks a name from the hat and uses as many words as they want to clue in their team members to guess the name. The clue cannot be a direct reference to the celebrity. The team has one minute to guess as many celebrities as possible or runs out of names. The guessing team gets one point per correctly guessed name. Then the second team picks a clue-giver and does the same as the first team until the time is up or there are no more names in the hat. The round continues until there are no more names in the hat.
For the next round, put all the names back into the hat. In round two, the clue-giver is limited to a single word. The clue-giver from each team has one minute to try to get their teammates to guess the celebrity.
In round three, absolutely no words are allowed – only gestures.
The team with the most points at the end of the game wins!
11. TRUTH OR DARE
Truth or Dare is a game that needs no introduction. It’s the perfect game to play when you’re bored with not much stimulation from phones and other tech around you. Plus, it’s a great way to pass the time with some drinks in hand.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Nothing needed
HOW TO PLAY
To play, simply go around a circle and ask players, “Truth or dare.” Players can choose between the two options. If they choose truth, they must answer a question of the group’s choosing. And if they choose dare, they must do a dare! If the player refuses to answer the question or do the dare, they must take a shot as punishment. On the plus side, the alcohol definitely will provide some liquid courage for future turns!
12. NEVER HAVE I EVER
Never Have I Ever is an iconic drinking game that’ll help you get to know your friends on a much deeper level. This drinking game can be pretty dirty and intrusive, so make sure everyone feels comfortable with this before proceeding.

- Never have I ever broken a bone.
- Never have I ever had a crush on somebody in this circle.
- Never have I ever been married.
After a player makes a statement, all players playing must put a finger down if they HAVE done it. If they are the ONLY player to have done it, it’s time for a storytime! And don’t forget to take a drink for each finger you put down.
Continue playing until there is only one player left.
13. WOULD YOU RATHER
Another pretty fun drinking game to play with your friends when camping is Would You Rather. This is a very simple drinking game that requires absolutely no prep or materials, so if you’re looking for something entertaining to do during your camping trip, this game is perfect!
WHAT YOU NEED
- Nothing needed
HOW TO PLAY
Would You Rather is an easy game with a very simple concept. Simply go around in a circle asking a question starting with: Would You Rather. This compares two different scenarios that other players must choose from.
Examples:
- Would you rather eat a cockroach or a worm?
- Would you rather walk in on your parents or have your parents walk in on you?
- Would you rather bathe in beer or in milk?
If you want to start a conversation, ask each player why they choose the option they chose. Continue posing would you rather questions until you are ready to move onto another game.
14. RUMMY
Up for a card game during the camping trip? Rummy is an absolute classic card game that you can play pretty much anywhere, as long as you have a deck of standard cards. Besides the original rummy game, there are plenty of other variations you can play, including Gin Rummy and Three Thirteen.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Standard deck of cards
HOW TO PLAY
Deal a certain number of cards, depending on how many people are playing. You would deal 10 cards for two players, 7 cards for three or four players, and 6 cards for five or more players. All the other cards remain face down in the middle as a stockpile. Grab the first card of the pile and flip it over; this card starts the discard pile.
Then, players take turns trying their best to meld cards. A meld consists of three or more cards of the same rank or three or more cards of consecutive value in the same suit. On each turn, a player draws a card from the discard or stockpile. When a player successfully makes a meld, they put this meld on the table. After making their first meld, players can now add onto other melds on the table on their turn.
Keep melding until a player runs out of cards. This player is the winner!

17. WHO AM I?
Who Am I is one of the best drinking games to play when in the great outdoors. The best part is that you barely need any materials to play – just a piece of paper, some tape, and a pen. Alternatively, if you have a stack of post-it notes, that works great, too. Do you have all the materials ready on hand? Let’s play this super fun guessing game!
WHAT YOU NEED
- Paper and tape or post-it notes
- Pen
HOW TO PLAY
Every person will write a famous person or character on a piece of paper or post-it note. Then, they will stick this note on the forehead of the player on their left. Once everyone has something on their forehead, it’s time to play!
One player asks a yes-or-no question to the group in order to guess who is on their forehead. You can ask questions like:
- Am I a man?
- Am I a real person?
- Am I an actor?
The rest of the group answers yes or no. If the answer is yes, the player can ask another question. If the answer is no, they must take a sip of their drink. Then, play passes to the left who does the same.
Continue playing unil all players have guessed the person on their forehead.
18. WEREWOLF
- Werewolf is a party game of lies, deceit, & accusations. Are you devious enough?
- 20 Villager Cards, 10 Werewolf Cards, 8 Wild Cards, 2 Seer Cards, 2 Doctor...
- Play with up to 35 people (or two 20 person games!)

WHAT YOU NEED
- Werewolf Card Game
HOW TO PLAY
Werewolf is a hidden role game that is a bit more complicated than your average card game, so head on over to our Werewolf game rules for a more thorough look. But here’s the basics of how to play:
Shuffle the character cards to start, with one player acting as Moderator. Each player is secretly given a role with the help of these cards. While there are many roles, the most basic roles are Werewolf and Villager. The Villager tries not to get killed, and the Werewolf tries not to get caught.
Nighttime falls, and everyone must close their eyes. At this point of the game, the Moderator asks the Werewolves to point at a player they want to kill. If there are any Seers or Doctors in this game, they will get to play their part in guessing any Werewolves in the group and healing any player, respectively. Then, the sun rises, and everyone wakes up.
Now, this is the fun part. Everyone must argue and try to find the Werewolves, as they will kill one player at the end of this round – before nighttime falls again! Argue regarding who looks suspicious, and try to kill the Werewolves!
Continue switching between night and day until:
- The Villagers kill all the Werewolves, in which case the Villagers win.
- The Werewolves’ number matches the Villagers, in which case the Werewolves win.
KIDS CAMPING GAMES
Of course, adults are not the only ones who can have fun while camping. Here are some of our favorite kids camping games to play in order to tire them out by the time nighttime falls.
19. CATCH OR DON’T CATCH
Catch or Don’t Catch is an incredibly simple game that is deceptively confusing. Who knew a game that involves throwing and catching a ball could be this fun? With this game, the faster you play, the better.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Ball
HOW TO PLAY
One player stands with the ball and everyone else stands in a circle around the player. The player in the middle goes around the circle and says “catch” or “don’t catch” while tossing the ball to a player. If the player in the middle says “don’t catch”, but the player catches it, they are out. The last person standing is the new player in the middle.
20. WHAT TIME IS IT, MR. WOLF?
What Time Is It, Mr. Wolf? is a childhood classic that anyone can enjoy – no matter their age! There are no supplies needed for this game, so this can be a fun camping game to play if you don’t have anything on hand. All you need are some basic counting and running skills.

HOW TO PLAY
Choose a players to be “Mr. Wolf” at the start of the game. Mr. Wolf stands at one end of the designated playing field and turns their back to the rest of the players who stand at the designated safe zone. At the starting line, the remaining players must chant: “What time is it, Mr. Wolf?” Mr. Wolf then answers saying “It’s something o’clock”. The hour called determines the number of steps the players take toward Mr. Wolf. So, for example, if Mr. Wolf says it’s 3 o’clock, each player must take 3 steps forward.
At any point in the game, instead of answering with an actual time, Mr. Wolf can yell out: “It’s lunchtime!” When it’s lunchtime, Mr. Wolf turns around and chases the remaining players in an attempt to tag someone to become the next wolf. The players must try to get to the designated safe zone before Mr. Wolf can catch them.
21. WEREWOLF TAG
Werewolf Tag is a fun, dark spin on a classic game. The main difference between normal tag and werewolf tag is that Werewolf Tag is played in the dark. Make sure you find a nice open space to play this game to avoid tripping over rocks or falling in creeks!
WHAT YOU NEED
- Pen
- Paper
- Designated area for the game
HOW TO PLAY
There are three types of players in a game of Werewolf Tag: the werewolf, the hunter, and the villager. To begin with, there is just one werewolf and one hunter, while everyone else plays a villager.
Write down the types of players on slips of paper and hand them out to each player to determine their role. Then the werewolf reveals themself by counting down from 20, giving each player time to hide. After the countdown, the werewolf goes around the designated playing area, trying to infect everybody in the game by tagging, turning them into werewolves too. In the meantime, the hunter tries to untag the werewolves. The game ends once there are either no more werewolves or villagers.
22. TUG OF WAR
Of course, another super classic camping game is none other than Tug of War. If you’re not sure how to play this game, have you been living under a rock? The cool thing about this kids camping game, you don’t need to have anything prepared but a rope to pull.

The teams must try to get the red tape over to their side!

- THE PLAY: Roll all 5 dice on your turn. If you don't like what you've rolled,...
Yahtzee is one of our favorite dice games. And the best part is that this game is incredibly portable, so you can easily bring it along with you whenever you’re heading on an outdoor adventure.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Five dice
- Dice cup
- Bonus chips
- Score card
HOW TO PLAY
Players take turns rolling dice. On each turn, you must roll the dice in order to score the highest possible score from the dice combinations. You can roll up to three times in one turn, but keep in mind that you don’t have to re-roll all five dice if you are not satisfied with the role. For example, you can keep three of the dice and re-roll just two of them. And again, you can roll just one for your third roll. After max three rolls, you must score the roll on your scoresheet.
On your scorecard, you’ll see different types of rolls you can make.
- Count and add only one number. For example, count and add only 3s. This ranges from 1 to 6.
- 3 of a kind
- 4 of a kind
- Full house
- Small straight (sequence of 4)
- Large straight (sequence of 5)
- Yahtzee (5 of a kind)
- Chance (score total of the 5 dice)
Now, here’s the kicker, you may only score each section of the scorecard once. So, if you’ve already done a 3 of a kind, you can’t do that again. You must score every single section.
Head on over to our Yahtzee game rules for a more thorough look at how to play this super fun dice game.

- Simon says stand up

However, every now and then, Simon may say a command without preceding the command with “Simon says.” If this happens, all other players must continue the previous command until they hear a new proper command that starts with “Simon says.” Eliminate any players who messed up!
26. CAPTURE THE FLAG
If you want to get the kids running around all afternoon, there’s no better game to play than Capture the Flag. In this game, you’ll divide the group into two teams.
